The Best Exercise…?

There has been a lot of times where I have faced the question: what is the best exercise to maintain an overall health and wellness? Well, even though there is not really one gold standard exercise that works for everyone but I can dare say that there might be an exercise which if preformed appropriately, the benefits are wonders!

Yes, you’ve guessed it right….it is swimming! 🙂

Here is a general overview of some of the benefits of swimming:

Stress Relief

  • Swimming is an exercise where the psychological benefits are gained instantly. For some individuals it as soon as they glance at the water it gives them joy and relieves their tension. For others it may be as soon as they get in the water and throughout their swimming experience.  Swimming is a workout where through the rhythmic patterns of strokes, deep breathing, concentration, focus and coordination helps you loosen your mind and body from stressful aspects of your life.

Total Body Workout

  • I’m sure my previous students would agree on this subject :-D. Swimming is a true total body workout! While swimming, you use a lot of muscles to propel yourself forward in water – some of the muscle in which you had no idea it existed until the following day after swimming 😉 . It is a great aerobic exercise where it not only increases your muscle strength but also increases the heart rate and is a great exercise for the heart.

Weight Loss

  • The topic that the majority of people are looking for is that they want an exercise in which they can effectively lose weight. Although I believe that losing weight should be in moderation, however, swimming can help you tremendously if you’re goal is weight loss. Since a lot of muscles are working hard to propel you forward, you’re using a lot of energy to do so. If swimming is done in combination with a healthy diet, your results of weight loss will be maximized.

Chronic Illness

  •  Because of the nature of water and its buoyancy effects, being in the water can reduce the stress on your joints while gaining muscle strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Swimming can be beneficial for multiple chronic illnesses. To name a few, swimming is a great exercise for people suffering from osteoporosis, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular diseases. Swimming also increases the overall quality of life by reducing chances of diabetes, obesity, depression, and hypertension.

To sum it all up, swimming = an overall great exercise! So take advantage of swimming opportunities around your community, spread the word, and minimize health diseases in our community by participating in swimming! 🙂

Swimming Equipment – What to bring for swimming?

Ever wondered what you need to bring for swimming? Or which product/brand to choose? Well here’s a brief information about some of the things that you will need for swimming.

Swimsuit

Swimsuits are generally made of two types of fabrics: lycra and polyester. Lycra (Spandex) is softer and has greater stretch capability allowing for more flexibility. Its fabric has a rubberized elastic material. However due to the rubberized elastic material Lycra tends to breakdown earlier than Polyester. Polyester materials like Durafast Polester or Endurance Polyester are soft and comfortable for swimwear but the material has less stretch because it uses less rubberized elastic material in the fabric allowing it to last longer than the average Lycra suit. So if you’re looking for something that would last you longer, I would go with polyester one. And if you want your swim suit to be more stretchy and comfortable then you might want to consider the lycra ones. Brands don’t really matter it really is a preference but two well known brands are Speedo and TYR, which personally I have had both brands and both are good! Prices vary depending on the brands and type – somewhere between $30 to $60 should be an average price for swimsuits.

Swim Caps

Some people prefer not to wear a swim cap, but I HIGHLY recommend having it when you come swimming. Wearing swim caps can protect your hair from the chlorine and help keep the pool clean. It also prevents hair getting onto your face and distracting you from swimming. There are two kinds of swim caps: silicone and latex. I would recommend the silicone caps over the latex ones. The latex swim caps are much thinner and can break easily. Also, the latex caps pull on hair while putting on the cap and taking it off. The silicone caps are thicker and are much smoother and easier on your hair when putting the cap on and taking it off. The price range for swim caps are between $7-$15.

Swim Goggles

Personally I cannot swim without my swim goggles! I HIGHLY recommend having goggles for swimming. Swim goggles not only protects your eyes from the chlorine in the water, but also allows you to have your eyes open and see in the water – which helps you in learning to maintain a nice straight streamline position of your body while swimming. Price for swim goggles are anywhere between $10-$25. To choose the right goggle, you need to try it on. Here are the steps:

  1. Pick a pair of goggles you like.
  2. Put the goggles on your face (without the straps on). Press down lightly to test the suction.
  3. You should feel a quick suction as you press.
  4. If the suction is not enough and the goggle fall off of your face, do not purchase the goggles because they don’t fit your face and they won’t prevent water from going into your goggles. On the other hand, if you feel the suction is too strong on your eyes it can be uncomfortable and painful.

Care Instructions

After swimming make sure you hand wash your swimsuit, swim cap, and swim goggles with cold water only! You do not need to use any detergent for washing them. Do NOT put your swim suit in washer or drier, as it can destroy the fabric. After hand washing them with cold water, hang them indoors and out of direct sunlight. If you make sure you follow these instruction your equipment will last you for a long time and even be passed on for many more generations to come! (…well….not really! 🙂 )

Here are some stores in the twin cities that you can buy your equipment from:

DICK’S Sporting Goods : http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/

Elsmore Swim Shope: https://www.elsmoreswim.com/

You can also find swimming equipment at Target, Walmart and Kohl’s depending on the season.

Hope this helped! Let me know if you have any questions about swim suits, goggles, swim caps or any other swimming related questions! 🙂

Survey Results

Salaams!

On March 22 we sent a request feedback from the girls and sisters about a swimming club.  More exactly, it read:

…We’re working to establish a swimming club exclusive to females to have the pool available in a private environment on a regular basis enshallah. However, I was not exactly sure what time and day of the week would work the best for most people.

The plan is to have the pool available once a week for swimming laps and classes for about 2.5 hours each time. This will be a constant schedule for a longer period of months (example: from September 2012 to April 2013).

The responses are tabulated and here we share them.  In total there were 60 responses and majority went for:

  • Saturdays at 4-7pm
  • Maple Grove / Brooklyn Park Pools
  • Exercise and Laps

Check out the plots below for more details.  We are moving forward with the planning and enshallah are hoping to begin in September of this year.  Stay Tuned!
